Mrs. Helble Ran in the Los Angeles Marathon!

Running a marathon is a big deal. The amount of physical as well as emotional labor that goes into training something like this isn’t tolerable for a lot of people- but not for Mrs. Helble.

The person who formally hated the idea of going for a run a few years ago ran 26.2 miles over a duration of four hours on Sunday, March 29th. But how exactly does one go from hating even the idea of going for a run to accomplishing a race that few have?

She started running because of the amazing feeling she got after she finished her daily stress-shedder of going for a run. Simply put, this was accomplished through increments of training, endurance, and a boat load of motivation from herself as well as her husband.

“I followed a training program that slowly pushed my runs an extra 10% within a timely basis.” Increments of adding a bit extra within each run pushes progress farther and farther within each run, which is essential if you’d like to go long distances.

It was absolutely mind-boggling to me that someone could withstand four hours of running with the only pauses being a stop every mile to get cup of water for twenty seconds. I had to know what got her through those four hours of pain and hard work.

“ A big thing that kept me going was remembering that I had the ability to do something physical that only few can.”

This was eye-opening to me and brought me back to Earth- reiterating that just by being able to walk or even a brief run is a privilege that not many have. Through many of our day-to-day struggles, we often forget how lucky we are to just exist.

On a separate note, I was also curious on what went into Mrs. Helble’s diet. Running burns an adequate amount of calories, and in order to replenish what she has burned off she eats a wide variety of meats and sticks to the healthier side of the food pyramid. This diet includes a variation of a “Meatless Monday”, perhaps later in the week.

FUN FACT: Mrs. Helble’s music choice that day was Spotify’s “Beast Mode” playlist.

Her advice to those who might be considering running a marathon is that they should never give up because a goal like this is definitely achievable. You can do anything you put your mind to, and practice makes progress. This took hard work to train the amount that she did especially in the amount of time that she did- but if you set your mind to it, you’ll be capable of something like this as well! :-)
