Softball: Grace Contreras

Out of all the sports TPAA does have, softball is a big one we lack. Many students at our school show a lot of skill in this sport and it’s unfortunate that they cannot represent the school with their talent. One specific student that shines in this particular sport is 7th grader, Grace Contreras.

Grace is currently playing for AVGSA and has played for them for six years. She shows so much talent and passion in this sport and when asked what makes her so passionate about softball, she showed a lot of joy in her response

“Softball means a lot to me because it has taught me so many life lessons throughout the years. I’ve also been able to make all these great friends while playing.”

Before softball, Grace had never been interested in playing the sport. It was until someone close to her started to play that sparked her interest and she hasn't stopped playing since.

“I got into softball because my sister started playing before me and ever since then I’ve always been interested in the game.”

Since starting the sport, Grace had played different positions but the position of “catcher” was the one that she felt most passionate about. She finds it to be challenging but wouldn’t take on any other position because she feels like the leader of the field.

“I have been a catcher for three or four years now. Being a catcher isn't necessarily easy but once I started playing I fell in love with it. As a catcher you have control of the game and the speed of the game; I just love that factor of it."

Being a softball player takes a lot of time and commitment, especially when it is an outside program because the organization does not know what is happening at school. She mentioned how the program is very professional, understanding, and wonderful to be apart of.

“Personally I think AVGSA is a great organization and it has come a long way from where it used to be. It’s the main reason I’m where I am today.”

According to Grace, she thinks anyone who has the slight bit interest in playing softball should take the risk and see the passion they gain from it.

“I think anyone should try it out and see if they like it because the game is just so much fun and you learn so much from it.”
